Garage Door Remotes and Keypads in Chandler, AZ

A remote that stopped working usually needs a battery, reprogramming, or a replacement that matches your opener's security technology. GT Garage Door Repair programs and replaces remotes, wireless keypads and car buttons for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and Craftsman openers, and finds the cause when the signal keeps dropping. Most remote visits are quick and same day. We are a veteran-owned, family-operated company based in Chandler.

Why a Remote Stops Working

When the wall button runs the door but the remote does not, the opener itself is fine and the problem is the signal. DASMA's remote control troubleshooting guide (opens in a new tab) lists the usual suspects, in roughly the order to check them:

  • Battery. Old or badly seated batteries are the most common cause. Replace the battery first.
  • Lost programming. A power surge, a repair, or a reset can clear the opener's memory. Reprogramming takes minutes.
  • LED or CFL bulbs. Some bulbs in the opener or garage fixtures give off radio interference that shortens remote range. Turn them off and test again; if range improves, a low-interference bulb fixes it.
  • Nearby wireless systems or broadcast towers. Security systems and strong radio signals on similar frequencies can crowd out a remote. These are harder to solve and sometimes need a receiver on a different frequency, not a new opener.
  • A damaged remote. A dropped or worn remote may need replacing.

If the remote and the wall button both fail, the problem is the opener, not the remote. See garage door opener repair for what that usually means.

Replacement Remotes: Matching Your Opener

Remotes are not universal across every opener. Each one has to match the opener's logic board and radio technology, and many older remotes stopped working with newer opener security. That is why a remote that looks identical online sometimes will not program.

We identify your opener model and its radio type, bring remotes that match, and program every one before we leave, along with clearing any lost or stolen remotes from the opener's memory. If your opener is old enough that matching remotes are hard to find, it may be time to look at garage door opener replacement; a new opener comes with current remotes and works with current car systems.

Wireless Keypads

An exterior keypad lets family members, dog walkers or cleaners get in without a remote or a house key. You set a PIN and can change it any time.

We mount the keypad outside the door, in sight of the door, and program it to the opener. In the East Valley we look for a spot that is shaded from direct afternoon sun where possible, since Arizona summers fade keypad buttons and are hard on the battery inside. Keypads must match the opener's logic board, just like remotes, so we confirm compatibility before installing.

Car Buttons and Smartphone Control

Many cars have a built-in garage button, often HomeLink, that can learn your opener's signal. Most pair with a few minutes of programming, but some older car systems cannot talk to the newest openers directly. In that case a small compatibility bridge plugged in near the opener solves it. Tell us your car's year and model when you book.

Smartphone control is the other option. Many current LiftMaster openers include myQ, and older compatible openers can often add it with a small hub. You can open, close and check the door from your phone and get an alert when it is left open. Our garage door openers and brands page shows which openers include it, and if you are installing a new unit, garage door opener installation covers setting it all up at once.

Questions

Remote and Keypad FAQs

Why does my garage remote only work when I am right next to the door?

Short range usually means a weak battery or radio interference. Replace the battery first. If range is still short, turn off LED or CFL bulbs in the opener and garage and test again, because some bulbs interfere with the signal. If neither helps, the opener's antenna or receiver may need attention, which we can check on a short visit.

Can I buy a universal remote for my garage door?

Some universal remotes work with many openers, but not all, and they must support your opener's specific radio technology. Newer rolling-code openers are pickier than older ones. We identify your opener model and supply a remote we know will program to it, so you are not returning remotes that look right but will not pair.

How do I get rid of a lost or stolen garage remote?

Clearing the opener's memory erases every remote and keypad paired to it, including the missing one. Then the remotes you still have are reprogrammed. We can do this during a visit and reprogram everything in one step, or walk you through the learn button on your opener if you prefer to handle it yourself.

Why will my car's garage button not program to my new opener?

Some older car systems cannot communicate with the newest opener security technology. The fix is usually a small compatibility bridge installed near the opener, which translates the car's signal. Newer cars generally pair directly. Tell us your car's year and model and we will confirm what you need before we arrive.

What can I do if my remote dies and I am locked out?

If you have an exterior keypad, use it. If not, and you have another way into the garage, the wall button still works. Without either, call us. Do not try to force the door. Adding a keypad is an inexpensive way to make sure a dead remote never leaves you stuck outside again.
