How to Tell Your Door Is Off Track

An off-track door is usually obvious once you know where to look. Check from a safe distance, without touching the door:

  • One side of the door sits lower than the other, or the door is visibly tilted in the opening.
  • One or more rollers are outside the track instead of riding inside the channel.
  • A section of track is bent, kinked or pulled away from the wall.
  • The door stopped partway with a grinding or popping sound and will not move further.
  • A lift cable is slack or hanging on one side.
  • There is a wide gap between the door and the frame on one side.

Earlier warning signs show up before a door jumps the track: a door that shudders or jerks as it moves, a scraping noise at the same spot every time, or an opener that strains more than it used to. Those are worth a garage door repair visit before they become an off-track call.

Why Garage Doors Come Off Track

Rollers do not leave the track on their own. Something pushes them out, and fixing that cause is what keeps the door from coming off again.

  • Vehicle impact. Backing into a closed or half-open door is a frequent cause. It bends the bottom panel or the lower track and pops the rollers out.
  • A broken or unwound cable. When one lift cable lets go, that side of the door drops while the other side holds, and the door twists out of the track. See garage door cable repair.
  • Loose track hardware. The brackets that hold the track to the wall loosen with years of vibration, and the track slowly spreads until a roller slips out.
  • Worn rollers. Older steel rollers without sealed bearings wear flat or seize, and a binding roller can climb out of the track. See garage door roller repair.
  • An opener forcing a binding door. If the door catches on something and the opener's force setting is too high, the opener keeps pushing and drives the door out of line.

East Valley conditions add to it. Monsoon dust storms push grit into tracks and rollers, and summer heat dries out lubricant, so a door that already binds slightly binds more.

What Not to Do With an Off-Track Door

The urge is to tap the roller back in and keep going. Please do not. An off-track door is partly supported in the wrong places, and the parts holding it are under spring tension.

  • Do not run the opener or press the wall button. Each attempt can bend another panel or pull the door further out.
  • Do not hammer or pry rollers back into the track. The bottom roller brackets are attached to the lift cables and are under spring tension. DASMA's garage door and opener checklist (opens in a new tab) says homeowners should not remove, repair or adjust springs, cables, brackets or other hardware.
  • Do not pull the emergency release if the door is open or partly open. Disconnecting a door that is out of track can let it drop.
  • Keep people, pets and cars out from under the door until it is secured.

If your car is stuck inside or the house is open, our emergency garage door repair page explains what you can safely do while you wait.

How We Fix an Off-Track Door

  1. Secure the door. The technician clamps the door so it cannot move or fall while the work is done.
  2. Take the load off safely. Where the door is twisted or hanging, the technician relieves the tension on the cables and springs in a controlled way before moving anything.
  3. Inspect everything the door touched. Track, rollers, hinges, cables, drums and panels are checked for damage using the points in DASMA's guide to checking a garage door for damage (opens in a new tab).
  4. Straighten or replace track. Lightly bent track can often be straightened; kinked or torn sections are replaced, and loose brackets are refastened.
  5. Reset the rollers and replace damaged parts. Flattened or cracked rollers, frayed cables and bent hinges are replaced. If a spring broke and caused the problem, it is replaced as well; see broken spring repair.
  6. Rebalance and test. The door is balanced, the opener's travel limits and force are reset, and the automatic reverse and photo-eyes are tested. If the opener itself was damaged, we handle that as garage door opener repair.

If a panel is bent or cracked too far to run safely, we show you the damage and price a replacement section or a new garage door, and you decide. You get the price before any work begins.

Keeping the Door on Track

Most off-track doors we see had warning signs first: loose track bolts, worn rollers, or a cable starting to fray. A yearly garage door tune-up catches those, tightens track hardware, and checks the opener's force setting so it reverses instead of pushing a stuck door.

Questions

Off-Track Garage Door FAQ

Can I put my garage door back on the track myself?

We recommend against it. The rollers sit in brackets that are tied to the lift cables and springs, so the door is under tension even when it looks stuck. Prying a roller back in can release that tension suddenly or drop the door. Leave the door where it is, keep everyone clear, and call a trained technician.

I backed into my garage door. Does it need to be replaced?

Not always. Many impacts bend only the bottom panel, the lower track or a few rollers, and those can be repaired or replaced individually. If several sections are creased or the door's frame is bent, a new door can cost less than repairing it piece by piece. We inspect the whole door and show you both options with prices.

Is it safe to leave an off-track door until tomorrow?

Only if it is fully closed, not tilted, and nobody needs to use it. A door that is hanging, tilted or partly open can shift or fall, so that one needs to be secured the same day. Either way, unplug the opener or stop using the button so nobody runs it by accident.

Will my door come off the track again after it is fixed?

Not if the cause is fixed along with the symptom. A door that jumped the track because of a loose bracket, a worn roller or a frayed cable will do it again if only the roller is pushed back in. We repair the cause, then test the opener's force and reverse so it stops instead of pushing if the door binds.

Why does my garage door shake before it comes off the track?

Shaking usually means a roller is binding or the track has spread away from the door. As the door moves, the roller catches, jumps and catches again, which you feel as a shudder. Left alone, that roller can eventually climb out of the track. Stop using the opener and have the track and rollers checked.
