What Counts as a Garage Door Emergency
Call right away if any of these is happening:
- The door is stuck open and you cannot secure the house for the night.
- Your car is trapped inside and you need it today.
- A spring has snapped. You heard a loud bang, there is a gap in the spring above the door, and the door now feels extremely heavy. See broken spring repair.
- A cable is loose or hanging, or one side of the door sits lower than the other. See garage door cable repair.
- The door is off its track, tilted, or jammed partway. See off-track garage door repair.
- The door came down hard or will not reverse when something is in its path.
- The opener is dead and the door will not move at all. See garage door opener repair.
A noisy door, a slow remote or a worn seal is usually not an emergency. Book a regular garage door repair visit for those.

What to Do While You Wait
These steps keep you safe and stop the damage from spreading. None of them involve touching the parts under tension.
- Stop using the opener and the wall button. Running an opener against a broken spring or an off-track door can bend panels, strip the opener's gear, or drop the door.
- Keep people, pets and cars out of the door's path. Do not walk or drive under a door that is partly open or hanging crooked.
- Do not touch springs, cables or the bottom brackets. They hold enough tension to cause serious injury. DASMA's homeowner checklist (opens in a new tab) says homeowners should not remove, repair or adjust springs, cables, brackets or other hardware; that work belongs to a trained technician.
- Pull the emergency release only when the door is fully closed. The red release handle hangs from the opener rail about 6 feet above the floor, and pulling it disconnects the opener so the door can be moved by hand, according to DASMA's guide to opening a garage door in a power outage (opens in a new tab). If the door is open or partly open, leave the release alone: with a broken spring, a disconnected door can fall.
- If the door feels very heavy, stop. A door that will not stay up by hand almost always has a broken spring. Do not try to lift it, prop it or hold it.
- Secure the house. If the garage door is stuck open, lock the door between the garage and the house and move valuables out of sight.
- Take a photo from a safe distance of the springs above the door and the cables at each side. Texting it to us helps the technician bring the right parts.

Power Outage? Check This First
If the power is out and the door was working normally before, you may not need a repair at all. Many current openers include a battery backup that runs the door during an outage. DASMA notes in TDS-385 (opens in a new tab) that backup batteries typically need replacing every 2 to 5 years, and a closed Arizona garage in summer is hard on them, so an old battery may not hold a charge when you need it.
With no backup, a door that is fully closed and in good balance can be released and lifted by hand with moderate effort. If it will not lift easily, stop: the problem is mechanical, not the power. If your opener has no battery backup, ask us about replacing the opener with a model that has one.
What Happens When You Call
- We ask what happened and whether the door is open or closed, then walk you through the safety steps that fit your situation.
- We tell you when to expect the technician. Same-day service is our standard.
- The door is made safe first. A door that is hanging, off track or held up by one cable is secured before anything else.
- You get the price before any work begins. No surprises after the repair.
- Repair and test. The usual culprits are a broken spring, a snapped cable or a door off its track, and the technician carries common parts for those repairs. After the repair, balance, automatic reverse and the photo-eyes are tested.
If a part has to be ordered, we leave the door closed and safe where possible and tell you when we will be back. We are a veteran-owned, family-run company, and we treat a door left open overnight the way we would treat our own. Once things are working again, a yearly garage door tune-up is the simplest way to catch a worn spring or fraying cable before it turns into the next emergency.
